John Riggins to Have Jersey Retired by Washington Commanders
John Riggins, often called “Rigo” or “Diesel,” is set to receive the honor of having his jersey retired on November 8 during a game against the Los Angeles Rams. Riggins, a Pro Football Hall of Famer, had a notable career spanning 14 seasons with the New York Jets and the then-Washington Redskins, now known as the Washington Commanders. He gained fame for his outstanding performance in Super Bowl XVII, where he rushed for 166 yards, including a memorable 43-yard touchdown on a crucial fourth-and-1 play, ultimately earning the title of Super Bowl MVP. However, his time in the league wasn’t without its challenges; his relationship with former owner Dan Snyder was fraught.
“Everything’s driven by his ego,” Riggins remarked, reflecting on Snyder’s approach, “And I think it’s hard to find success in that kind of environment, especially when it feels like you’re dealing with a kid’s mentality.” Back in 2009, he was quoted saying, “his heart is dark.” More recently, he openly criticized Snyder’s decision to rename the team to the Commanders, expressing feelings of being “completely disenfranchised” in a podcast from 2022.
Over his career, Riggins played a key role in Washington’s first Super Bowl victory and holds the franchise record for rushing yards, totaling 7,742 yards and 85 touchdowns. Still, his jersey had not been retired until now, possibly due to his contentious history with Snyder.
However, with the acquisition of the team by new owner Josh Harris in 2023, Riggins has reestablished a connection. He even attended organized team activities spring of 2026 to engage with current players. Harris noted, “As many know, Riggo helped define one of the most successful eras in our history.” The sentiment was echoed in a statement posted on social media by the team.
“He played with a rare blend of physicality, fearlessness, and personality that captivated fans and inspired his teammates,” Harris continued. “Our fans not only admired him; they connected with him on a deeper level. He was genuine and unequivocally himself.” Team president Mark Close also weighed in, saying, “It’s about creating a bridge between the past and the present,” highlighting the franchise’s wealth of legendary players deserving recognition.
In his playing days, Riggins emphasized not just performing well, but also entertaining the fans. In a playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings, he rushed for 185 yards and even took a moment to bow at midfield after the game. Reflecting on his approach to the game, he mentioned, “It was vital for me to see smiles on their faces; I was always seeking their approval,” which he shared in a tribute video released by the team. “I felt compelled to do my best out of fear of disappointing people.”
