Washington woman says voices told her to stab 5-year-old daughter to death and bury her body in neighbor’s yard, police say

A woman told police she heard someone telling her to stab her 5-year-old daughter to death and bury her in a neighbor’s yard. according to to the Washington State Police.

Police were called to a home off Commercial Avenue in Darrington by a 30-year-old woman who had allegedly confessed to killing her child.

Alyssa Sanchez, 30, told police she stabbed her daughter to death in the back seat of her Toyota Camry on Feb. 14 and then threw the knife in the trash. She reportedly hid her daughter’s body under her blanket and her body remained in the car for several days.

Investigators said Sanchez asked a friend to buy a shovel a few days after the incident.

She told police that she buried her daughter’s body in her neighbor’s front yard because she was afraid of the smell.

Family members told police they had not seen the child since February 14th.

Police told Sanchez: Said A voice reportedly told her, “She’s the devil, she’s the devil, she’s the savior, and sometimes her ancestors are talking to her.” She said the voice told her she needed to kill her daughter and herself to get to heaven.

On Tuesday, Sanchez was booked into the Snohomish County Jail on suspicion of first-degree domestic violence murder. On Wednesday, Everett District Court Judge Tam Bui set the woman’s bail at $5 million without objection from her defense attorney.

Police said they recovered the child’s body early Wednesday morning. A “substantial amount” of blood was found in the woman’s Camry.

The Snohomish County Coroner’s Office will determine the child’s cause of death.

The judge ordered Sanchez to undergo a mental health evaluation by a professional in prison. If convicted, he could be sentenced to life in prison.

In a similar story from 2023, Eric Megan, a 34-year-old from Connecticut, murdered his mother to silence the voices in his head. He was then found dead in his cell with a ligature around his neck.

Darrington is a small mountain town of about 1,400 people located about an hour and a half from Seattle.
