Washington’s Dillon Johnson ‘all good’ for CFP championship game

HOUSTON — Washington's 1,000-yard rusher Dillon Johnson expects to play in Monday night's national championship game against Michigan despite suffering knee and foot injuries late in the Sugar Bowl. .

“Everything is going well” for the showdown, Johnson said. “I'm ready to rock and roll and give whatever the team needs. I'm ready, man.”

While Heisman Trophy runner-up Michael Penix Jr. and his star receiver have garnered attention for the Huskies' prolific offense, Johnson has played a key role in the offense.

The Mississippi State transfer rushed for 1,162 yards and 16 touchdowns this year, including an incredible performance of 152 yards and two touchdowns in the Pac-12 title game win over Oregon.

There was some question about Johnson's status when he was injured on a running play during the final drive against Texas. He had been nursing his leg injury since November.

But he has been able to practice this week, and even though they don't expect Johnson to be 100 percent, coach Karen DeBoer and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb are confident he can perform to his full potential. Are expected.

“They're going to have to carry me out on a stretcher, but I don't think they can hold me back,” the senior said. “I'm definitely going to play on Monday. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity so I have no choice.”

The matchup between Michigan cornerback Will Johnson and Washington receiver Roma Odunze will probably be the most interesting game of Monday night.

Coach Johnson said the Huskies' receiving corps is the best group the Wolverines will face this year.

Johnson established himself as a top cover corner this season, recording three interceptions and four passes defended in 11 games. Odunze, who could be a top-10 pick in April's NFL Draft, will test him.

“I'm confident in myself for most of the matchups, so it's just a matter of preparation,” Johnson said. “That's my biggest mindset: prepare as much as you can before the game, go out there and do it all the way.”

He added: “I can't wait.”
