Denver Mayor Mike Johnston said on Wednesday's CNN “Out Front” broadcast of CNN's “Out Front” in which Ice agents attacked after being released from Denver's custody, and there are people who have been categorized by cits if there are people who want access. But this was a procedure that has been working for a long time. Until this week there were no issues. ”
Host Erin Burnett said after playing a video of the exchange between Johnston and Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and said, “You obviously know that he takes the problem or umbrella in the way he presented it, but does he have a point? Does the situation of what happened in that case in Denver show that it has to change?”
Johnston said, “Yeah, I had an established policy to do this. We did it 1,226 times, and there was no problem. What happens is that if ICE wants access someone has our custody, they ask for notifications and when they will be released, where they will be notified. We're not like some of the other cities today. They're actually notifying the ice, so they can pick them up. This is the first time I've learned that there was an incident. There were six ice officers. The individual was not armed. We quickly walked him to a safe place. It's a parking lot fenced to a place where he can be detained. And again, it's working safely before. I reached out to the ice. I'm going to meet them next week. If there's a procedure, if we can adjust it to make it safer, we're open to it. But this was a procedure that's been working for a long time. Until this week, there was no problem.”
Johnston also contacted ICE after the incident and said he would “consider how to improve” the process.
