Watch live: House to vote on plan C to avert looming government shutdown

The House is scheduled to vote on the third version of a spending bill to keep the government shut down at 5 p.m. Friday, hours before the government shutdown deadline.

The new proposal reportedly includes government funding through March, in addition to disaster relief and agricultural assistance following days of chaos at the Capitol.

“We will not shut down the government,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) said Friday. “And we want to thank farmers in need, victims of disasters across the country, and our military, essential services, and all those who rely on the federal government for paychecks during the holidays. Fulfill your obligation to ensure that you are paid.”

Johnson announced a bipartisan funding deal Tuesday night, but it stalled Wednesday after President-elect Trump and his allies urged Republican lawmakers to oppose it.

President Trump called on Congress to take action on raising the debt ceiling, which was not mentioned at all in the original plan, a request that came as a surprise to many lawmakers.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson presented his Plan B to MPs, repealing dozens of measures and including new language to raise the debt ceiling. President Trump supported the new plan, but it was not passed by the House of Representatives because all but two Democrats and 38 Republicans opposed it.

Democrats fiercely opposed the amendment, demanding a return to the original bipartisan plan and arguing that raising the debt would allow Trump to cut taxes and pass new spending. Several Democratic lawmakers continued the call Friday.
