Watch live: White House holds press briefing as Johnson fights to stay Speaker

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre is scheduled to brief reporters on Friday as the House of Representatives votes on the speaker.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) is struggling to keep the gavel as at least a dozen conservatives remain mum on whether they support him. At least one MP has already publicly expressed opposition to Mr Johnson.

The press conference comes as the United States is reeling from fears of military extremism and possible political violence following the New Year's Day attacks in New Orleans and Las Vegas.

The attack in Louisiana left 15 people dead, including the suspect, a former Army soldier from Texas, who drove a rented pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street. Law enforcement found a pro-ISIS flag on his car and past social media posts sympathetic to the group. The man killed in a Tesla Cybertruck explosion outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas has been identified as an active-duty military member.

President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden are scheduled to visit New Orleans next week.

Biden also announced Friday that he would block the Japanese-owned sale of U.S. Steel to Nippon Steel after a year-long review.

The event is scheduled to begin at 1:15 PM ET.
