‘Watch out! Watch out!’ Chicago cop’s encounter with surprise trespasser in Aldi refrigerated section goes viral

mobile phone video Footage of a Chicago police officer pulling a coyote from its hiding place in the refrigerated section of an Aldi supermarket has gone viral online.

The incident occurred around 9:45 a.m. Monday inside the store at 800 North Kedzie in Humboldt Park. WLS-TV reported.

“We picked a strange place. They do this sometimes. They make mistakes. They're trying to avoid us. They're trying to hide from us.”

Witnesses told police they had seen a coyote wandering around the parking lot a few minutes earlier, and that the coyote eventually wandered into the produce section of the store. According to WLS, the creature was hidden under a selection of high-quality cheeses in a cooler.

The short video shows officers pulling the coyote's tail out of the refrigeration section, while one person standing in the back yells to others, “Hey, watch out, guys! Watch out. “Be careful! Be careful!”

The coyote was in an aisle at the supermarket, and when the officer released it, it quickly ran away behind another produce section.

However, WLS said police and Animal Care and Control safely removed the coyote and no injuries were reported to the coyote, witnesses, police or animal control officials.

“They picked a strange location. They do this sometimes. They make mistakes. They're trying to avoid us. They're trying to hide from us. '' he told the broadcaster. “It probably went into the store trying to find a new hiding place. Similar things have happened in the past.”

Officials told WLS that the coyote will be transported to Flint Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation to make sure it is safe before being released back into the wild.

This time of year (January to March) is coyote breeding season, so coyotes are especially active, officials told the station, adding that sightings tend to increase.

“Some of these animals especially make mistakes and find themselves … [in] buildings — often what we call transient animals, so these are animals that don't actually have a mate yet,” Gehrt added to WLS.

Officials also told the station that while coyotes generally do not pose a threat to humans, it is wise not to leave food on porches or patios.
