Waymo Explores Expansion into Northeast Cities

Waymo, the autonomous driving technology company under Google’s parent umbrella, is considering an expansion into northeastern cities by initiating mapping and test drives in Philadelphia and New York City. These efforts could set the stage for future Robotaxi services.

While Waymo’s recent test drives don’t necessarily mean a commercial service is launching soon in these areas, it’s part of a broader pattern. The company has already conducted similar test trips this year in places like Houston, Orlando, Las Vegas, San Diego, and San Antonio. Typically, these involve sending vehicles equipped with Waymo’s autonomous systems, accompanied by human drivers, to gather data and assess new environments. Even though the vehicles eventually operate autonomously, a driver remains behind the wheel for safety. Insights gained from these trips are crucial for enhancing the performance of AI drivers.

In some instances, these explorations may lead to commercial availability. For instance, after a road trip to Santa Monica, California, in 2023, Waymo launched a Robotaxi service there, which now covers areas including Santa Monica and Beverly Hills.

In Philadelphia, Waymo plans to deploy its vehicles in some of the city’s most complex areas, such as downtown and along major highways. According to a spokesperson, people can expect to see Waymo vehicles navigating various districts, from North Central to University City and along the Delaware River.

Meanwhile, in New York City, Waymo will manually drive vehicles in Manhattan, covering areas from just north of Central Park to the Battery, as well as parts of downtown Brooklyn. They will also map portions of Jersey City and Hoboken in New Jersey. Though Waymo has applied for permission to test autonomous vehicles in New York City, approval is still pending.

This isn’t Waymo’s first venture into New York City. Back in late 2021, the company deployed a small fleet to map sections of Manhattan and New Jersey. They even conducted tests in Buffalo to assess autonomous systems under winter conditions.

If Waymo does receive approval to test vehicles autonomously in New York, the path to full commercial deployment is expected to be lengthy. Current regulations in the city require a human in the driver’s seat, a restriction that Waymo is keen to see changed.

Waymo’s national testing program is strengthened by existing Robotaxi operations in cities like Atlanta, Austin, the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. Plans are also in place to launch services in Miami this year, followed by Washington, DC in 2026.
