Wayne Gretzky started pursuing Alex Ovechkin on Friday night, and the journey nearly culminated in a day of trekking that would see the greatest scorer in NHL history surpassed.
With three goals needed to exceed Gretzky’s record, Ovechkin netted two, tying the score and putting in incredible effort for a hat trick.
Yet, Gretzky held the solo record for more than 31 years. However, he now has company and is soon looking up for the first time in quite a while.

However, Gretzky is more than just a record; his achievements can be quickly approached.
“It’s fine… It’s all part of the game,” Gretzky said to the major sports network shortly after Ovechkin tied him.
“Alex is fantastic for this sport, great for Washington, and wonderful for his home nation. That’s commendable. I am very proud of him. I’m also proud of my own achievements. That’s what elevates our game.”

Alex Ovechkin Odds: When will he surpass Wayne Gretzky’s scoring record?
Gretzky became the NHL’s top scorer when he overtook Gordie Howe on March 23, 1994, netting his 802nd career goal. He added another 92 goals before retiring in 1999, bringing his total to 894.
Ovechkin brightened the scene just four minutes into his game against the Chicago Blackhawks, getting as close as possible. Then, just five minutes after the third period began, the Capitals capitalized on a power play, which Ovechkin seized, accepting a pass and shooting over goalie Spencer Knight.
