Reflection on Memorial Day Amid Celebrations
Anniversaries often prompt us to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice, yet they’re frequently intertwined with barbecues and beach outings.
During New York City’s 2025 Fleet Week, members of the US Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard engaged with the public, aiming to raise awareness about the roles uniformed personnel play in protecting the nation.
In conversations with various service members, many expressed their thoughts on how Americans observe the anniversary and honor those who served before them.
US Navy Chief Virgil Newton urged people to keep the sacrifices of others in mind while enjoying time with family and friends. “Don’t forget to do those things,” he mentioned, emphasizing that those who sacrificed can’t share those moments of joy with their own families.
Echoing this sentiment, US Coast Guard Public Relations Officer Samantha Corcoran encouraged people to gather and share stories of their loved ones who have fallen. “Have a good time, but remember what they gave up,” she said.
US Navy Reserve Caitlyn Bell added her voice, reminiscing about her grandfather’s experiences in World War II through his photos and letters. “I think it’s important to reflect on how these sacrifices impact our freedom and security today,” she said thoughtfully.
Joel Del Rosario, manager of the US Marine Corps, conveyed the significance of Memorial Day. He advocated for taking time to educate oneself about the true meaning of the holiday. “It’s a chance to remember,” he stated, suggesting that everyone should reflect on what the day truly signifies.
As the US Navy marks its 250th anniversary this year, there seems to be a unique blend of pride and sorrow among its service members. Chief Newton shared a personal note, recalling his family’s long history of military service, remarking, “Looking back, it’s awe-inspiring what we’ve built over the last 250 years.” His sentiment captures both a legacy and a loss, reminding us of the weight that history carries in the ongoing narrative of service and sacrifice.
