Senate Republicans Focus on Medicaid Reforms
During a recent discussion, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) highlighted the Republican efforts to address issues like “waste, fraud, and abuse” within Medicaid. This was shared in an appearance on Breitbart News, where he assured audiences that the GOP has no intention of harming beneficiaries.
Host Matthew Boyle pointed out President Donald Trump’s stance against Medicaid cuts, except for those related to waste, fraud, and abuse.
Boyle asked Thune about concerns from some senators regarding rural hospitals, especially in red states that opted not to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. Thune acknowledged that Senators Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Rick Scott (R-FL) are particularly invested in the Medicaid situation.
Thune explained that while Senator Scott sees many aspects of the program as wasteful, Senator Hawley has a different perspective. The goal is to reconcile these views.
“The President’s direction is clear,” Thune stated, emphasizing the importance of not harming beneficiaries while working through these changes. He also pointed out, rebutting some criticisms, that they are not cutting Medicaid but growing it at a slower rate than allowed by current laws. Over the past five years, there has been a 50% increase in Medicaid that he believes is unsustainable.
Thune attributed much of this expansion to policy changes during the Obama and Biden administrations, which broadened eligibility and allowed more individuals to enroll in the program beyond its original intent. “We aim to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse, and to strengthen the program for those it was truly meant to support,” he said.
Thune recognized that different senators have varied concerns, especially considering the impact on rural hospitals in his state. “If these hospitals are struggling, we want to make sure they’re supported,” he insisted.
He concluded by expressing confidence that they could improve Medicaid and eliminate inefficiencies from the Biden administration without negatively affecting beneficiaries.
