Los Angeles Mayor Takes Legal Action Against ICE

On Tuesday, Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles declared that the city would join a civil class action lawsuit against the Trump administration concerning actions taken by Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The mayor expressed her support for protests against ICE’s actions, suggesting that unrest will persist until the agency’s aggressive tactics come to an end.

A statement from Bass’s office included remarks from City Attorney Heidifeldsteinsoto, stating, “The federal government has placed numerous armed agents in our communities, many without visible identification. Their actions, which involve unconstitutional roundups and anonymous detentions, create fear and confusion among residents.” He emphasized that the city’s decision to intervene in the lawsuit demonstrates that such behaviors will not be tolerated.

This initiative focuses on intervening in the “Perdomo v. Noem” class action lawsuit initiated to challenge the detention of individuals by federal agents. The suit claims that U.S. immigration and federal agencies, including customs enforcement and border security, are conducting illegal raids that unfairly target residents in Los Angeles based on their race and ethnicity, effectively denying their constitutional rights.

The announcement arrives on the heels of militarized vehicles being observed in the city, with federal agents making their presence felt near MacArthur Park, causing alarm, even as children attended summer camps. Mayor Bass and other local leaders have expressed their discontent with the presence of federal troops and military vehicles, asserting that these should not become standard sights in the community.

This announcement follows a federal lawsuit filed a week prior against LA regarding its “sanctuary” policies, which purportedly discriminate against federal law enforcement agencies.
