We Can Use ‘Outcry’ ‘from the Media’ to Help Constrain Trump Like We Did Before

On Friday's broadcast of CNN's “The Situation Room,” Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) said the best way to try to rein in the Trump presidency is if Republicans control both chambers of Congress and the White House. During his speech, he said that the method is public opinion, and pointed out the following. At various points during his first term, “there were media and public outcry in this country” over certain policies.

Host Wolf Blitzer said, “As you know, the Republicans are going to control the Senate, the new Senate, but they're bullish on their chances of keeping the House. Assuming that happens, Democrats will lose control of the Trump presidency. What measures should we take to curb it?”

Khanna replied: “Well, the biggest lever is public opinion. As you remember, Mr. Wolf, I think you know that Donald Trump has complete control of both departments and is trying to separate children from their families. When he did, there was an outcry from the media and people in this country, and he changed within a few weeks. And he tried other policies during his first term. However, the Democrats used the bully pulpit and we could use the committee hearings to restrain him from making terrible choices. I think that would give us a chance to stop his extreme positions.
