We Need Asylum Pause, Dems Have Supported ‘Decriminalizing’ Border

On Friday’s “PBS NewsHour” broadcast, new york times Columnist David Brooks says President Joe Biden’s immigration policies are “not working,” and Democrats are taking left-wing positions on the issue, as are Democratic presidential candidates who support “decriminalization of the border.” He said he was taking it. He also argued that it’s time for Biden to “suspend the asylum process until we can digest all the people.” [are] Already in the system. ”

Mr Brooks said: “That is clearly President Trump’s greatest strength. Only 28% of Americans support Joe Biden’s immigration policies. They prefer Trump’s policies to Biden’s policies by an almost infinite percentage. So Trump has the country on his side when it comes to this border. And the simple fact is that the Democratic Party is somewhat out of touch on this issue. In 2016, a number of candidates raised their hands in the Democratic primary. , who argued in favor of border decriminalization. That was a far cry compared to the current situation in the United States.”

He continued, “Second, Biden’s policies are simply not working. This means that our asylum system was created after World War II to help people experiencing extreme persecution.” That was a long time ago. Today, there are about 40 million people in the world facing such persecution. We can’t take them all in. And we can’t legally grant them asylum. You can’t have a policy that prioritizes people who are breaking the law rather than people who are applying through the system. So for me, the problem now is not necessarily immigration, it’s chaos. We have to do what I think we’ve done, which is to suspend the asylum process until we can get through all the asylum seekers. [are] Already in the system. And that would at least try to impose some order, because if there was just chaos, that would be just bad news for Biden. ”
