‘We Will Put Them On Their Knees, Begging for Mercy’

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) and the Teamsters union have threatened to go on strike against major Hollywood studios if contract negotiations fail later this year.

Sean O’Brien, president of the International Brotherhood of the Teamsters, made the threat public Sunday while speaking at a gathering of more than 2,000 crew members.

“We’re not afraid to attack,” O’Brien said. “If these greedy companies choose not to reward their members, whether it’s Amazon, Netflix, Sony, or Disney, they’re going to go on strike. He turns them on their backs, makes them fall to their knees, and begs for mercy.”

Mr. O’Brien went so far as to call the studio a “white-collar criminal organization.”

“There’s a message for the white-collar criminal organization known as the studios,” he said. “When you play with the Teamsters or any other union, it’s a full contact sport. Put your helmet on and buckle up your chinstrap.”

IATSE International President Matthew Loeb had a less hostile message, saying: “We have enough to live with.” He also addressed the ongoing issues surrounding artificial intelligence and whether it will replace workers.

“These benefits should take the pressure off our jobs so we can enjoy our families, live our lives, and not have to work 80 hours a week,” Loeb said. “If that efficiency is going to happen, it needs to come to us and our jobs. And we use it to make our jobs better. I want a piece of it.”
