Saturday Night Live didn’t hold back in its May 10th episode, diving right into the week’s craziest news. During the weekend update, hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che were ready with a mix of humor, playful jabs, and just enough chaos to keep things lively.
They kicked things off by discussing the Vatican, where Cardinal Robert Francis Prebble, originally from Chicago, is gaining attention for being a contender for the new Pope. While many were fixated on his American background, Jost and Che had their own takes. “I love how conservatives are complaining that this Pope is too ‘woke’,” Jost quipped. “How did a 69-year-old man from Chicago suddenly wake up? He just stepped out and said, ‘Hey, I’m him/he/he’s the 14th.’”
But the religious humor didn’t stop there. Che played off the AI-generated image of Trump dressing the Pope, bringing laughter from the crowd. “It’s hard to believe that everyone in the Catholic Church is becoming a very young boy,” he said, which left Jost momentarily speechless and cracking up.
As if that wasn’t enough, Che proposed a bold idea: imposing 100% tariffs on foreign films, somewhat humorously. “Honestly, every movie I’ve seen looks like it was shot in a Florida condo with leather sofas, so it’s not a big deal for me.” The Trump jokes kept coming, with Che noting the former president’s peculiar suggestion to reopen Alcatraz, describing it as something “terrifying, beautiful, strong, miserable and weak.” Ouch—definitely one of the sharper punchlines of the night.
Then, Marcello Hernández added his flair to the mix, joking about the next installment of the Jurassic franchise and awkwardly mispronouncing Scarlett Johansson’s name as “Carly Sohansson.” Jost quickly reminded everyone that Johansson is actually his wife, to which Hernández quipped back that “my wife is Rihanna!” The audience loved that one—maybe a bit too much, prompting Jost to humorously question, “What’s with all the laughter?”
All in all, it was a classic weekend update filled with sharp humor, bizarre moments, and just a hint of confusion—exactly what one might expect.
