Weight loss medications transform the bridal industry as David's Bridal takes action

GLP-1 Medications Impact Wedding Dress Shopping

The emergence of GLP-1 medications is altering how Americans approach grocery shopping, dining out, and even fitness routines. Surprisingly, this trend is also affecting the wedding industry.

Bridal retailers are expanding their inventory and ramping up orders to accommodate the significant bodily changes many brides are experiencing. Reports indicate that some bridal shops are now asking brides-to-be to sign waivers when they order dresses that don’t fit their current size.

For instance, a bride in New York who lost 50 pounds using a GLP-1 medication was asked to sign a waiver for a dress with a waist three inches smaller than what she currently wears. While such exemptions existed before, they have become increasingly common.

A public opinion poll conducted by KFF found that about 12% of American adults currently use GLP-1 drugs aimed at weight loss and managing chronic conditions like diabetes. Interestingly, nearly 18% of respondents indicated they’ve utilized GLP-1 medications at some point, with women more likely than men to report current usage—15% versus 9%.

A recent survey from an online wedding planning company revealed that around 10% of couples planning to wed in 2026 are using GLP-1 drugs, with another 10% considering them before their wedding.

According to the Mayo Clinic, users of these medications often lose between 10% and 15% of their body weight, and some studies indicate losses can reach up to 20%.

David’s Bridal, the largest bridal retailer in the U.S., has introduced a “Fit Guarantee” aimed at clients affected by weight loss drug use, starting in May 2026. This initiative is touted as a way to help brides find the right fit, regardless of size.

The company emphasized its commitment to reducing “fit anxiety” among shoppers, highlighting their willingness to assist customers in obtaining dresses that will fit them well, whether that involves making a new size or adjusting existing garments.

CEO Kelly Cook stated that the company recognized the need to take special measures to support brides who have lost significant weight. He mentioned, “Size anxiety is always one of brides’ biggest concerns, and right now, it’s at an all-time high.”

Over the past year, David’s Bridal has reportedly seen a 50% rise in rush orders. Notably, a significant portion of brides are now finalizing dress purchases within six months of their wedding, a shift from the previous norm of shopping nine to 12 months in advance.

Bridal consultants are adapting their recommendations, knowing that many brides may continue to lose weight. One bridal studio owner noted that she advises brides expecting further weight loss to opt for designs with flexible silhouettes.
