Israel’s far-right Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, has led reforms to the country’s prison system, which human rights group B’Tselem has called “torture camps” where abuse is systematically perpetrated.
The Guardian’s Jerusalem correspondent, Bethan McKernanspoke to several former inmates about their experiences.
“Almost every detainee told me the same story,” Bethan said. Michael Safi“They suffer severe beatings every day, sometimes once a day, violence during counts, sexual violence, starvation rations, denial of access to medical care, denial of basics like water and soap, and not being allowed outside or into the sunlight.”
