Well-known national park lifts ban on 'environmental contaminant' before the 250th anniversary of America

Mount Rushmore’s 250th Anniversary Celebration

This summer marks an exciting milestone—the 250th anniversary of the United States—and there are grand celebrations in store. Fireworks will definitely be part of the festivities.

On July 3rd, a significant Independence Day event will take place at Mount Rushmore, organized in collaboration with the state of South Dakota, as noted by the National Park Service (NPS).

The evening promises to include educational activities, patriotic displays, and live music to commemorate this special occasion.

A representative from the Department of the Interior shared their excitement about the upcoming event, describing it as a unique opportunity to celebrate the American spirit. They mentioned a “spectacular fireworks display” that would honor the history tied to the monument and those who contributed to its creation.

The spokesperson further emphasized, “This administration is eager to participate in a significant event that pays tribute to the foundations of America, reflecting careful planning and coordination.”

In February, South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden sent a letter to President Trump, inviting him to this, what he termed, “the biggest birthday party ever.”

“This administration is eager to participate in a significant event,” the spokesperson reiterated.

The event has been assured not to interfere with park operations, concession services, or other park activities.

It’s interesting to note that a report from the U.S. Geological Survey in 2016 linked past fireworks displays to increased pollutant levels in the water surrounding Mount Rushmore.

In a statement from 2021, the NPS reiterated that “fireworks use and possession is illegal on all lands managed by the National Park Service.” The last fireworks display was held in 2020, which was notable since it was the first in more than ten years, hosted by then-Governor Kristi Noem and President Trump.

In 2022, a request from South Dakota’s Department of Tourism to hold another fireworks display was denied due to concerns about potential injuries or damage to park resources and how it might disrupt park operations.

For those interested in attending the special event at Mount Rushmore, starting from April 8 to 12, there will be a lottery system where Americans can enter for a chance to win tickets. The application fee is a non-refundable $1, with requests for up to four tickets permitted.

Visitors will be allowed admission starting at 1:00 PM (MT) on July 3, with festivities kicking off at 4:00 PM (MT).
