Kelly Clarkson Talks About Feeling Restricted on Her Show
Kelly Clarkson expressed feeling constrained by corporate regulations while discussing her experiences with fans during her Las Vegas residency, which started on July 17. She highlighted the difference between the creative freedom she enjoys as a performer and the rigid policies she faced while hosting “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”
In a light-hearted moment, Clarkson joked about potentially getting fired by NBC, noting that she no longer works there after deciding to end her show five months ago.
“I’d get fired by NBC, but I don’t work there anymore,” she quipped, adding some levity to her frustrations.
Clarkson criticized NBC’s human resources meetings, saying that the corporate rules would never fly on her tour bus or in the kinds of environments she navigated as a performer. “It’s funny, you go to those HR meetings, and you’re like, ‘Nobody on the road would last,’” she observed.
She reflected on her early touring days, recalling being just 19 years old on a bus with a group of guys and feeling bemused by the limitations. “What? I can’t do what?” she recalled thinking, stating it felt completely out of place to have such strict guidelines.
Touching on her recent weight loss journey, she seemed to reference NBC’s policies when she mentioned how people discourage commenting on such changes. “I just think that’s so dumb. It makes people feel good when you say, ‘Oh, you look really good,’” she remarked, contradicting the notion that compliments imply the opposite.
The audience responded enthusiastically, cheering her on throughout her speech.
“No more HR meetings!” Clarkson shouted, emphasizing her relief. She went on to explain that her presence in those meetings usually wasn’t welcome. “Everyone actually hated doing HR meetings with me because I am a nerd,” she said, recalling how she often would stop discussions to seek clarity on examples.
Clarkson concluded her thoughts by reiterating her views on the necessity of protecting everyone in a workplace. However, she was quick to add, “Anyway, I don’t have to do it anymore.”
