Wells Fargo Championship Preview

There are 15 major champions in the field at Quail Hollow. Scheffler may not be in attendance, but the event will be headlined by Rory McIlroy, defending champion Windham Clark and Jordan Spieth.

Clark looks to get off to a strong start to the 2024 season. He has one win, two runner-up finishes and four top-10 finishes at his AT&T Pebble Beach event. Last year, he saw it all come together at this event. It helped give Clark the confidence to win the US Open. Clarke’s fight is in the right place, meaning a title defense could be on the horizon.

McIlroy earned his 25th PGA Tour win. He and Shane Lowry won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans title two weeks ago. The Northern Irishman will be hoping to build on his momentum heading into Valhalla and the PGA Championship. This could be a big week for the four-time major champion.

Quail Hollow is a perfect fit for his playstyle. He is the only player to have won this tournament three times, and if he continues to putt well, McIlroy could win in 26th place.

Spieth’s continued struggles caused him to miss the CJ Cup, which was cut by Byron Nelson last week. But when the spark of greatness is there, it’s hard to count him out.

Will Zalatoris missed last week with back inflammation, but is back on the field this week. Meanwhile, Ludwig Oberg will aim for continued success near the top of the leaderboard every week.

With the PGA Championship fast approaching, this week will allow players to sharpen their games and get into a competitive headspace. There are no cuts, so a player can use all four of his days to fine-tune for next week’s Gauntlet.
