Impact of SNAP Changes on Las Vegas Grocery Stores

Changes to food assistance programs instituted by the Trump administration are pushing grocery stores in Las Vegas, Nevada, to make tough decisions, including laying off staff and reducing operating hours.

A number of critics, particularly from the left, are voicing concerns about modifications to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which now restrict benefits to those who are able to work and not disabled.

“There’s a palpable sense of panic. People are really worried about how they’re going to feed their families,” one local owner expressed.

A report from KVVU-TV highlighted that these adjustments are significantly affecting local businesses, prompting them to take drastic action.

“Honestly, we’re in a really tough position at the moment,” said Mario Berlanga, who owns Mario’s Westside Market.

His store’s sales have plummeted by about 30% compared to the previous year, compelling him to cut back on hours. “More than 20 people lost their jobs because business just isn’t there,” he shared.

Berlanga mentioned he’s never experienced anything like this in the 27 years his store has operated. The layoffs have created a sense of distress for his family.

“When you typically manage a family of four or five with $200 and suddenly you’re making do with $80, you have to rethink everything,” Berlanga added.

“People are clearly on edge. Conversations revolve around feeding their families,” he continued.

Another store owner reported that layoffs impacted over half of their customers on the Eastside. “We’ve been seeing an influx of homeless people showing up. They don’t have any money,” the owner noted. “Thirst is a real issue for many of them.”

This owner also faced the tough choice of reducing hours and letting employees go.

County Commissioner Tick Segelblom mentioned that the cuts are especially hard on the county since many low-income workers depend on benefits to help with food costs.

The city of Las Vegas issued a statement addressing the situation, emphasizing that the changes in the SNAP program come from federal mandates beyond local control. “We understand these adjustments are challenging for both businesses and individuals relying on federal assistance,” officials noted. They also mentioned efforts to inform the public about local food pantries and charity programs available for those in need.
