Minneapolis Police Chief Discusses Partnerships and Staffing Challenges
During an appearance on NewsMax TV’s “National Report” on Thursday, Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara addressed the ongoing efforts to rebuild the police department. He emphasized the importance of partnerships, stating, “The only reason we’ve made progress over the past few years is that we’ve been building a partnership. Without our law enforcement and community partners, we can’t effectively tackle the numerous challenges we face.”
Co-host Emma Lecchenberg raised a broader question regarding the collaboration between local and federal law enforcement, noting, “When managing crime in Minneapolis, could additional support from federal law enforcement be beneficial?”
O’Hara acknowledged a significant staffing issue, mentioning, “It’s a fact that the Minneapolis Police Station has one of the lowest staffing levels among major urban police departments. We’ve seen a decline from around 900 officers before 2020 to losing over 500 since then.” He expressed hope for improvement but highlighted the trauma that has contributed to officer departures, explaining, “Many have left due to the stress of their experiences and the pressures on their families. This environment makes it difficult for them to continue serving.” He reiterated that partnerships have played a crucial role in prosecuting violent crimes effectively.
