Maryland Governor Discusses Medicaid and Immigration on Fox News
During a recent episode of “Special Report” on Fox News Channel, Maryland Governor Wes Moore (D) addressed a question regarding the legality of Medicaid coverage for undocumented immigrants. He stated, “We certainly need to fix an immigration system that is fundamentally broken.”
The host, Brett Baier, brought up a story from the Washington Post regarding a significant bill affecting Maryland, particularly noting that new regulations could cause around 60,000 immigrants, including refugees and asylum seekers, to lose their Medicaid coverage. Baier asked, “Is it acceptable for tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants to receive Medicaid in Maryland?”
Moore responded by emphasizing the importance of the bill, asserting that approximately 5 million people are at risk of losing health care. He pointed out that the proposed legislation would result in a $400 million cut for rural hospitals in the state.
Baier pressed further, asking if it is acceptable for undocumented immigrants to access Medicaid. Moore reiterated, “It’s essential that we address our broken immigration system.”
Baier noted, “We’re in our current situation without any comprehensive immigration bills but are trying to streamline the Medicaid rolls.”
Moore added, “This reflects the need for well-thought-out solutions. The ongoing patchwork responses will have serious repercussions for our state. Without a comprehensive immigration strategy, we continue to rely on these incomplete solutions.”
Baier concluded, “If that significant bill didn’t pass, those 60,000 undocumented immigrants would remain on Medicaid in Maryland.”
Moore stated, “We must pursue comprehensive reform. Regardless of this issue, we are focused on the 250,000 individuals facing health care loss. However, we are lacking the intellectual rigor that is essential.”
