West Coast governors form a coalition to oppose Trump’s CDC vaccine guidelines

West Coast Governors Take a Stand Against Trump’s CDC Guidelines

Three Democratic governors from the West Coast are now aligning with President Donald Trump’s Health Agenda, a turn of events highlighted by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) amidst what is described as the “failed politics of the pandemic.”

In a significant move, one governor has outright dismissed Trump’s CDC regulations, opting instead to develop independent vaccine guidelines.

“Democrats argue that unscientific school lockdowns, mask mandates for infants, and stringent vaccine passports have eroded Americans’ trust in public health institutions,” a spokesperson noted.

Nixon stated that the Advisory Committee on Vaccination Practices (ACIP) will remain the authoritative body for vaccination recommendations, emphasizing that the health department will adhere to strict evidence and established scientific standards.

HHS Secretary Vows to Restore Trust

After the mass dismissal of all 17 ACIP members in June, HHS Director Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has pledged to “restore public trust” in vaccine recommendations.

On Wednesday, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek, and Washington Governor Bob Ferguson announced the formation of the West Coast Health Alliance. This announcement came just a day before Kennedy was scheduled to testify about vaccines before the Senate Finance Committee, following the firing of CDC director Susan Monares a month prior.

In a joint statement, the governors expressed, “President Trump’s purging of CDC personnel and the clear politicization of health institutions directly threatens the health and safety of Americans. The CDC has been weaponized to promote ideology rather than science, which has serious health consequences.”

Bipartisan Calls for CDC Investigation

Plans are underway to disregard CDC guidelines under Trump’s leadership, focusing instead on the establishment of communal vaccine and health guidelines in their states. The governors intend to base these guidelines on reputable medical organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Should this alliance solidify, it could lead to a diverging health system where millions in California, Oregon, and Washington may follow state recommendations that contradict federal advice.

A news release from Newsom’s office outlined, “The three states will begin modifying their health guidelines based on respected national healthcare organizations’ vaccination recommendations.”

Furthermore, tribal nations will retain full sovereignty over their vaccination programs, with the alliance stating it will not interfere with federally recognized tribes’ rights to set their own health policies.

Challenges for the CDC

The CDC has been under scrutiny for months since the Trump administration initiated a major overhaul, resulting in the termination of numerous staff and the dismantling of a division accused of political bias. CDC director Susan Monares was dismissed following her resistance to a new vaccine directive, an action that triggered a wave of resignations among senior officials.

According to a source at the CDC, HHS leaders, including Kennedy, pressured Monares to retract approvals for specific Covid-19 vaccines. After she refused, she was told she had to resign or be terminated, subsequently hiring legal representation.

Blue State officials indicated that the new policies will be finalized in the coming weeks.
