West Hollywood, That Prevented Trump from Speaking, Lowers Rainbow Flags to Half-Staff for Charlie Kirk

West Hollywood Honors Charlie Kirk with Rainbow Flag at Half-Mast

In a surprising move, West Hollywood, known as a supportive hub for the LGBTQ+ community, has lowered the rainbow flag to half-mast to honor conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Earlier, the city had taken measures against former President Trump, citing “hate speech and violent rhetoric,” which raised concerns among some regarding free speech rights.

West Hollywood Mayor Lindsey Hovas had previously indicated, in statements to local leaders, that Republican presidential candidates would be banned from holding events in the city. She emphasized the importance of being mindful with speech and expressed her distress over the political climate brought on by Trump’s election.

Hovas articulated that the campaign must extend to everyone, stating that the hate speech associated with Trump and his campaign has no place in any community across the nation.

However, the decision to honor Charlie Kirk—who has openly criticized the LGBTQ+ movement—seems to contrast sharply with previous stances. Reports have emerged following the backlash about lowering the pride flag for Kirk, especially after his tragic shooting in Utah.

This action included lowering two LGBTQ+ pride flags outside a local animal hospital. A spokesperson clarified that this was done in accordance with city policies which dictate that flags can be lowered to half-mast based on presidential directives.

Kirk had vocalized support for LGBTQ+ conservatives, arguing against extremists who claimed they couldn’t associate with the movement.
