A 21-year-old West Point cadet who went missing over the weekend during spring break in southern Florida was found dead in a river Monday night, authorities said.
Javin Morris’ body was found in New River two days after he went missing while partying with a group of friends. According to the Sun Sentinelsaid, citing a Fort Lauderdale police report.
The California man likely drowned and no criminal charges are suspected, authorities said.
“Information gathered through our investigation led FLPD dive teams to search the New River near the area where he was last seen.” police told KPIX.
“His body was discovered by divers on Monday night. At this time, his death appears to be an accidental drowning and no foul play is suspected.”
Morris and friends were at a bar near the river around 11 p.m., but the friends “lost sight of Morris” several hours later, according to police documents reported by the Sentinel.
Friends called him to no avail and were unable to find him at the hotel, the paper said.
After Morris’ father learned of the situation, he filed a missing persons report.
West Point Maj. Rebecca Gogue said Morris is remembered as a “bright, resilient young man with a determination to succeed.” According to the San Francisco Chronicle.

“Cadet Morris was a valued member of the Cadet Corps and was committed to serving his country as an Army officer,” West Point Superintendent Lt. Gen. Steve Gilland said in a statement, according to the newspaper. “The entire West Point community extends its deepest condolences to the Morris family.”
Morris graduated from Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton in 2020 before beginning his education at the U.S. Military Academy, according to his Facebook page.
