West Virginia Senate seat flips red as Joe Machin​ retires

Republican Governor Jim Justice of West Virginia lost On Tuesday, Democratic challenger Glenn Elliott entered the race to replace retiring Democratic-turned-independent Sen. Joe Manchin.

This seat was previously held by Democrats, but Republicans easily flipped the seat to red, giving Republicans an advantage in regaining the Senate majority.

First up, Manchin. won He won his seat as a Democrat in 2010 and has served in the Senate ever since. Manchin is next switched In May of this year, his party affiliation changed from the Democratic Party to independent.

“I have never viewed America through a partisan lens,” Manchin said in a statement. “However, since I entered the United States Senate in 2010, I have realized that both Democrats and Republicans are abandoning West Virginia and our country because of partisan extremism, while simultaneously putting our democracy at risk.” I've seen it.

“Today, our national politics is broken, and neither party is willing to compromise to find a middle ground,” Manchin continued. “In order to remain true to myself and my determination to put country before party, I have decided to register as an independent without affiliated with a political party and continue to fight for the good majority of Americans. .

Justice's predecessor was previously a Democrat, but leading up to the election West Virginia was expected to be a landslide Republican victory.
