Trump Announces New Agreements to Reduce Drug Costs
In a significant development for healthcare policy, President Donald Trump revealed nine new agreements with pharmaceutical companies aimed at reducing prescription drug prices for Americans.
These voluntary agreements require manufacturers to align U.S. drug prices with the lowest prices available in other developed countries, a strategy referred to as the most-favored-nation (MFN) pricing model. With this latest expansion, there are now 26 pharmaceutical companies participating in this pricing model, which represents nearly 89% of the U.S. market for branded drugs.
The new agreements include mid-sized pharmaceutical firms such as Alcon, Astellas Pharma, BeOne Medicines, BridgeBio, CSL, Kyowa Kirin, Sun Pharma, Teva Pharmaceuticals, and UCB.
According to the White House, this extension applies price caps across numerous essential treatment areas, including oncology, hemophilia, Parkinson’s disease, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and chronic skin conditions.
Officials have pointed out that every state Medicaid program will have immediate access to MFN pricing for these manufacturers’ products, which is expected to save billions while addressing the loopholes that allowed foreign nations to benefit from U.S. drug innovations at lower prices.
Beyond the direct price cuts, these new agreements will link international market access to substantial investments in U.S. healthcare infrastructure.
Collectively, the nine pharmaceutical companies have committed at least $19.6 billion toward near-term manufacturing investments in the U.S. They will also provide significant amounts of critical active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) — such as vital antibiotics, anticonvulsants, and immunosuppressants — to the Strategic Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients Reserve. This is meant to protect the national drug supply from foreign disruptions.
The Trump administration continues to build on earlier executive actions and agreements formed over the past year, showcasing the MFN program alongside its direct-to-consumer TrumpRx platform as the mainstay of its drug affordability initiative.
Looking ahead, the administration estimates that broader statutory MFN rules and negotiations for foreign pricing could lead to up to $600 billion in healthcare savings domestically over the next decade.
At the same time, President Trump has reiterated his request for Congress to pass the Great Healthcare Plan, which aims to permanently establish MFN protections in federal legislation.
President Trump states that Americans are now enjoying the lowest prescription drug prices globally thanks to these recent price reductions. He claims drug prices have already decreased and could decline by as much as 80%, labeling it a historic accomplishment.
