“Our thoughts are with his family. [sic] Of course with my family and loved ones during this difficult time,” Jean-Pierre said at a regular press conference.

“Let me just say this: We understand that they have requested privacy. So we’re going to respect that. And we’re going to leave it there.”

Simpson’s family announced his death from prostate cancer on social media Thursday morning. He was 76 years old.

Simpson is best known for his arrest and indictment on June 12, 1994, for the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman.

Brown famously accused Simpson, then an actor, NFL analyst and television pitchman, of physical abuse during their seven-year marriage that ended in 1992.

After arranging to turn himself in five days after the murder, a strange turn of events occurred: Simpson led police on a low-speed highway chase that was broadcast nationally. The pursuit ended with his arrest at his residence in Brentwood, California.

Simpson’s “trial of the century” is notable for the former football player’s legal team, led by Johnnie Cochran, who argued that their client’s arrest and prosecution were caused by racial bias on the part of the Los Angeles Police Department.

However, despite overwhelming evidence linking him to the murder, the Heisman Trophy winner was acquitted on October 3.rdIn 1995, it was judged by a jury of nine black panelists, one Hispanic citizen, and two white Angelinos.

In a civil suit brought by the Goldman family, a jury found Mr. Simpson responsible for the deaths of Mr. Brown and Mr. Goldman in 1997. It was ruled that Mr. Simpson must pay $33.5 million, an amount that his family has not yet received.

David Cook, a lawyer for the Goldman family, said: daily mail Simpson has never repaid the loan in full over the past several decades, and the amount has grown to more than $100 million.

“We have to start over here,” Cook said following Simpson’s death. “We’re going to work on it. There might be something in there.”
