Jack Hughes Reacts to ESPN Reporter’s Joke During Game

An ESPN reporter attempted to lighten the mood with a joke aimed at American hockey star Jack Hughes during a game on Thursday. The exchange might not have gone as planned, as it seemed to frustrate Hughes, but it could have also ignited a fierce competitive spirit in him.

Hughes, who scored the game-winning goal for Team USA in February’s gold medal match, had a rough spell last season after inadvertently slicing his finger on glass while cooking during a team dinner. This injury required surgery and sidelined him for about a month.

During the game against the Philadelphia Flyers, ESPN’s A.J. Mleczko made an attempt at humor, saying, “Well, it’s great to see you healthy. Let’s wrap you in bubble wrap and use plastic cutlery this year. That sound good?”

Hughes, however, was not amused.

He responded with, “I think that’s a weird joke mid-game,” before skating away with a sense of calm.

Later in overtime, Hughes scored the decisive goal, which he celebrated by tossing his stick into the crowd.

Some users on social media criticized Hughes’ response as harsh or inappropriate. One individual expressed, “Jack Hughes had a very public display of misogyny that he’s not coming back from in my mind, unless he shows that he has grown up and learned. That’s a harmless, but pretty inappropriate thing to say to a professional athlete.”

However, many rallied in defense of Hughes.

It’s worth pondering what one might expect when throwing a light question at a professional athlete right in the thick of a game. Players are usually pumped with adrenaline, completely focused, and not really in a joking mood. They’re all about securing a win.

Let’s hope the ESPN reporter wasn’t too put off by Hughes’ reaction. After all, when you poke at Jack Hughes, you might just awaken the fierce competitor within.
