Arch Manning knows that his performance against Ohio State wasn’t up to par on Saturday.
The Texas quarterback completed 17 of 30 passes for 170 yards, along with a touchdown and an interception, when he talked to the media following a 14-7 loss to the Buckeyes in Week 1. Manning, who comes from a legendary football lineage, expressed dissatisfaction with his start against the reigning national champions.
“I’m holding myself to a high standard,” Manning mentioned to reporters. “I needed to perform better, lead the team more effectively, and help my teammates excel. In the end, I just wasn’t enough.”
One issue for Manning was that after Texas managed a 260-yard offensive effort, they didn’t seem comfortable until the second half, resulting in just seven points on the board.
Manning later stated, “I need to be more aggressive,” emphasizing the need to start strong from the get-go.
Being part of the famed Manning family, which includes his grandfather Archie and uncles Peyton and Eli, adds significant anticipation and pressure on the sophomore quarterback. He mentioned that his performance is motivating him as he prepares for the upcoming game against San Jose State.
“I’m determined,” Manning said. “This really pushes me to improve. We have to step it up to win.”
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian observed some specific areas where Manning needs to develop. It seems that building a rapport with his receivers is a key focus.
“There were a few instances where we had an intersection route, and I think he didn’t quite plant his foot where he should have before throwing. Gaining that level of confidence is essential, especially against quality defenses. Real game scenarios bring different challenges, with tighter windows compared to practice,” he commented.
