What are Pope Leo XIV’s views on important topics such as sexual abuse, climate change, and poverty?

What are Pope Leo XIV’s views regarding the challenges facing him and the Roman Catholic Church?

Church unity

Leo, who recently became the 267th pope, seems to be following in the footsteps of Pope Francis. However, he’s managing to engage traditionalists without the alienation that sometimes characterized his predecessors. He’s described as “solid in judgment” and “enthusiastic in listening,” without the need to assert his authority overtly. In fact, observers note that he appears to be “more practical and cautious” than Francis.

When he first appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, he chose a more traditional papal outfit, suggesting a more formal approach compared to Francis’s simpler attire. Many expect him to align with Francis’s vision but perhaps in a more thorough manner. In his initial remarks, Leo emphasized the need for the church to “work together to build bridges,” aspiring to symbolize greater unity.

Notably, some conservative American church leaders might find his previous critiques of Donald Trump and his generally progressive stance concerning. Steve Bannon, a notable ally of Trump, labeled Leo as the “worst choice for Catholicism,” criticizing him as an “anti-Trump Pope.”

During his tenure in Peru, Leo (formerly known as Robert Prebble) gained a reputation for being a unifying force among differing ideologies within the church’s hierarchy. They’ll likely need that skill to bring together various factions worldwide.

Social justice, climate, peace

Leo’s theological focus mirrors that of his predecessors, particularly on issues affecting the poor and marginalized. He has shown a keen interest in social media, particularly concerning immigration. As Pope, he is expected to adopt a less confrontational tone than Francis while still prioritizing similar issues rather than attempting to significantly alter the previous pope’s legacy.

His views on the role of bishops have evolved during his two years as the head of the Vatican’s powerful Dicaster for Bishops. He described bishops as “not little princes” but rather humble leaders who should walk alongside the communities they serve.

Furthermore, Leo has expressed the urgency of addressing the climate crisis, reflecting Francis’s environmental priorities. He advocates for translating words into actions while cautioning against the potential dangers of unchecked technological progress. According to him, “dominion over nature” should not equate to “tyranny.”

Leo also hopes for active Vatican involvement in resolving conflicts, especially in regions like Ukraine, Gaza, and South Sudan. His first address as Pope included a call for “peace with you,” emphasizing the importance of disarmed peace.

Sexual abuse

BishopAccountability, a survivors’ organization, has claimed that Leo has a history of overlooking abuse allegations against certain Peruvian priests and has been resistant to revealing information about these cases.

During his leadership of the Dicaster for Bishops, he oversaw instances of abuse and covered up cases, according to Anne Barrett Doyle, co-director of BishopAccountability. She noted that he kept the details private and did not strip the accused bishops of their titles.

As Pope, it’s crucial for him to earn the trust of survivors and their families, she remarked.

Supporters of Leo argue for his innocence, asserting that media portrayals have been inaccurate. They believe he followed proper protocols during the incidents involving the accused priests.

The topic of sexual abuse is likely to shadow Leo’s papacy, similar to what Francis has experienced. While Francis has a deeper understanding of the church’s crisis, critics say he hasn’t taken enough decisive action, and eyes will closely monitor Leo’s responses.

LGBTQ+ Issues

In recent years, Leo has not made many prominent comments on sexuality and identity. Back in 2012, he raised concerns about how Western media and culture might promote “sympathy for the gospel” at odds with traditional beliefs, particularly regarding “gay lifestyles” and same-sex families.

Last year, he neither supported nor opposed blessings for same-sex couples, citing cultural differences around the world where such relationships are still criminalized.

A UK-based advocacy group commented that opinions can evolve, noting Leo’s openness toward marginalized groups, though concerns linger among LGBTQ+ Catholics regarding his stance on specific issues.

Women

In October 2023, Leo expressed skepticism about the ordination of women, suggesting that it could complicate existing church issues. He pointed out that traditional Apostolic doctrines are clear on women’s roles in the priesthood.

However, he acknowledged the valuable contributions women can make to the church at various levels.

Notably, in 2022, he appointed three women to assist him in advising bishops on selections.
