The recent U.S. strike on Iran has stirred concerns that Iran might ramp up clandestine attacks on Americans. Just days before the attack on Iran’s nuclear facility, Iranian officials hinted at activating sleeper cells. This prompted the Department of Homeland Security to issue a warning about an escalating threat environment, indicating that affiliates of the Iranian government could instigate terrorist activities.
The memo suggested that if Iranian leaders called for retaliatory violence, it could motivate violent extremists in American cities to act independently. It noted that several recent domestic terrorist attacks were fueled by anti-Semitic or anti-Israel sentiments, hinting that the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran could inspire further attacks on U.S. soil.
On another note, Trump announced a ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel that is set to take effect soon. While it seems Iran may be focused on de-escalation for now, the U.S. still remembers previous incidents where Iranian operatives plotted violent acts domestically.
Back in 2011, two individuals tied to the Iranian regime were charged with planning to assassinate a Saudi ambassador in the U.S. One of these co-conspirators had links to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, a body infamous for its state-sponsored terrorism.
More recently, a suspect named Farhad Shakkari was arrested for allegedly planning a hit on Trump, part of a broader scheme to target Iranian opposition figures living in the U.S. This attack was supposedly a retaliatory measure against Trump’s earlier decisions, including the killing of a high-ranking Iranian general.
Law enforcement also tracked an operative linked to these plots who was thought to be targeting former Trump officials, reinforcing the notion that the Iranian network remains a prominent threat.
Concerns continue to circulate, particularly after last weekend’s attack that significantly damaged Iranian nuclear sites. For its part, Iran appears to respond by considering actions that could disrupt global oil transportation routes.
Iran even launched a missile at a U.S. Air Force base in Qatar recently, although there were no reported casualties. In a post regarding the incident, Trump alluded to the lack of surprise surrounding Iran’s actions, suggesting they may have warned U.S. officials in advance.
Despite the turmoil, Trump expressed hope that the recent conflict could foster a pathway to peace between Iran and Israel. Meanwhile, the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not commented on these developments, leaving many questions unanswered.
