‘What do you want?’ French-Canadian referee botches the start of championship game with embarrassing mistake

A Canadian Football League referee is making headlines for all the wrong reasons after making a hilarious mistake at the start of a championship game.

At the 111th Gray Cup held in Vancouver, Canada, veteran umpire Benoît Major was in charge of the coin toss, which is a typical umpire's specialty.

Along with Coinbase Canada CEO Lucas Matheson, Major stood between the captains of the Toronto Argonauts and Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

“Okay, Lucas, get up here,” the referee said to Matheson. “Give us the honor,” he continued, handing the coin to the CEO.

As the crypto boss tosses a coin, the referee realizes he has forgotten the most important part of the coin toss and grabs his arm to stop him. The Major forgot to ask the Argonauts' team captains whether they would choose heads or tails.

“Check, check, check,” the major said in his French and Canadian accent as the coin hit the ground.

“I have to ask…'What do you want?'” the major said, picking up the coin.

While the football players were clearly unimpressed, as this was the most important match of their lives, the referee made a quick pose, laughing and joking. The players didn't think it was funny.

“Okay, Toronto,” the Major resumed, putting his arm on the shoulder of Toronto's Davaris Daniels out of embarrassment.

“You are the visiting team, what do you choose?”

After Daniels called “heads,” the referee returned the coin to Coinbase's CEO.

“Okay, Lucas, take two.”

As is trending in the sports world, the CFL chose to take shelter in a silly moment and published the full text of the coin toss in the league's game bulletin. X page.

The fun begins at around 1:30 in the video.

NFL referee Phil Luckett said Bettis started saying “heads” before changing his answer.

After the Lions won the coin toss, they got the ball and kicked the winning field goal three minutes into OT.
