Warriors’ Free Agency Standoff
Nearly a decade ago, the Warriors made headlines by signing Kevin Durant, which many considered one of the most remarkable moves in NBA free agency history, especially after their record-breaking 73-9 season.
Fast forward to 2025, and it seems Golden State is unusually quiet. Two weeks into free agency, they haven’t made any significant moves.
Only two players are rumored to potentially shake things up: Jonathan Kuminga and Al Horford.
There’s chatter about Horford possibly joining the Warriors, among other teams, but progress appears to be at a standstill.
“The Warriors were hoping to sign him last week, but it didn’t happen,” Mark Spears mentioned on ESPN’s “NBA Today” recently.
While Golden State is viewed as a favorable destination for Horford, he’s still weighing his options.
“I think the Lakers, Atlanta, and Milwaukee are also keeping an eye on him,” Spears added. “He’s contemplating retirement and taking his time, especially with a sixth child on the way.”
On the other hand, Kuminga, a restricted free agent, presents another challenge for the Warriors. They extended a $7.5 million qualifying offer but are hesitant to commit to a more expensive, long-term deal due to uncertainties regarding his fit with the team.
The young player’s situation seems to be holding up the Warriors’ offseason plans, with speculations around whether they might trade him or sign him first.
Buddy Heald, a sharpshooter for the Warriors, shared his thoughts on Kuminga during a Summer League game, saying, “We all know he can play. We want him back. He’s a special talent, and I hope we can team up for a successful run.”
Despite the lack of movement, Golden State might still be poised to make their first significant transaction soon, regardless of Kuminga’s situation.
Spears suggested that some unexpected developments could finally lead Horford to team up with Stephen Curry and break this free agency stalemate.
Interestingly, Spears noted that Horford’s 10-year-old son, Ian, might play a role in his decision-making. Ian has started traveling with him again and shows a keen interest in basketball, often mentioning players like Curry. “You can tell he’s trying to influence his dad to keep playing,” Spears remarked.
