The Unpleasant Yet Fun Phase of Womanhood
Menopause, an unwelcome phase in every woman’s life, is starting to get more attention these days.
In recent years, figures like Gwyneth Paltrow, Brooke Shields, Halle Berry, Drew Barrymore, and Salma Hayek have opened up about their experiences with this “change.” It seems to be a topic that’s finally seeing the light.
But, there’s this stage leading up to menopause that often goes unnoticed. I mean, right now, I find myself dabbling in TikTok trends, which makes me feel a lot more glamorous than I actually am.
There’s even a new term circulating: “Cougar Puberty,” coined by TikTok users. One popular TikToker recently shared this in a viral video, saying, “Do you know what the cool kids are calling it?”
She goes on to express a preference for viewing this phase as a reset, rather than an end.
Others have been discussing this term for quite a while now, particularly those who’ve lived through it. One individual shared, “I’m 37, and I have been thrown into menopause. It feels like a second adolescence.” It’s intriguing how many relate to that sentiment.
Another commenter, Lisa, touched upon feeling overwhelmed by this sudden shift in her body. In a video, she mentioned, “It’s like I’m hooked to this rollercoaster, and I can’t quite figure out what’s going on.” It resonates with many, I think.
Comedians and writers are getting in on this too. Christina Kuzmic and a friend created a T-shirt highlighting the term “Cougar Puberty,” showcasing how it’s being adopted in casual conversations.
Understanding the Stages: What is Menopause?
So, menopause is often conflated with various transitional phases, but they aren’t the same. In fact, menopause is defined as the point when a woman has gone 12 consecutive months without a period.
Leading up to that, women can experience irregular cycles for several months. This phase can be a confusing time when symptoms start to ramp up as hormones shift.
Typical symptoms can include hot flashes, mood swings, sleep disturbances, and vaginal dryness, among others. It’s not unusual to also deal with anxiety or memory issues during this time.
Timing of Menopause
For many women, menopause generally occurs in their mid-40s, but it can happen as early as their mid-30s or as late as the early 50s. The experience can last anywhere from a few months to almost a decade, but the average age in the U.S. is around 51.
The Causes Behind Menopause
It all starts when women’s ovaries produce less estrogen, which ideally regulates the reproductive system. Changes in estrogen and progesterone trigger a series of shifts in how the body functions.
Managing Perimenopausal Symptoms
While there’s no way to stop this transition, some strategies may help alleviate symptoms. Lifestyle changes like a balanced diet, regular exercise, and reducing caffeine and alcohol can make a difference. Ensuring you get enough calcium and sleep is equally important.
Additionally, some choose to manage symptoms with medications, including antidepressants and hormonal treatments. Consulting a healthcare provider for options like hormone therapy may also be beneficial.
