What Partnership HealthPlan wants members to know about upcoming Medicaid and tax reductions

House Passes Comprehensive Bill, Now Awaits President’s Approval

The House has just passed a significant Republican bill aimed at cutting taxes and reducing Medicaid benefits, which is now on its way to President Donald Trump for his signature.

  • The legislation, phrased as Trump’s “big beautiful bill,” has received Congressional approval, with the expectation that it will be signed into law shortly.
  • Partnership HealthPlan, a leading Medicaid provider in California’s Shasta and Siskiyou counties, is advising its members to wait for further updates while keeping their current coverage.

Just moments after Congress approved the sweeping legislation, a parent group representing Shasta County’s main Medicaid health care providers reached out to inform their members.

They stated, “We do not foresee any immediate changes to most MEDI-CAL enrolled programs. The partnership will continue managing MEDI-CAL until we receive guidance on any upcoming changes,” according to Dustin Leda, a spokesperson for the Partnership Health Plan.

Leda emphasized the critical nature of maintaining medical services and ensuring that appointments and prescriptions continue to be filled. “Please refrain from making any coverage decisions until you hear from the state or partnership,” he advised.

He also noted that various proposed Medicaid reductions have different implementation dates, causing some uncertainty about how they will unfold. As information on the reductions develops, the partnership is choosing not to speculate but is preparing to adjust as the state clarifies its stance.

The Role of Medicaid in Northern California

Medicaid serves as an essential safety net for low-income individuals and those with disabilities. Both California and the federal government share the costs associated with this program.

Partnership HealthPlan oversees the Medi-Cal benefits for around 66,000 individuals in Shasta County, which represents nearly 37% of the local population. Similarly, Siskiyou County has a higher percentage, with 43% of its residents relying on these benefits.

A recent survey indicated that around 38% of Californians are enrolled in Medi-Cal.

According to Leda, the partnership serves 22,000 healthcare providers and has agreements with 89 hospitals across its 24-county service area. He pointed out that any reductions in Medicaid could impact healthcare access for all residents.

The House vote was quite close, at 218-214, occurring after extensive discussions on July 2nd, with D-New York’s minority leader Hakeem Jeffries delivering a notably lengthy speech. Trump is expected to formally endorse the bill at a signing ceremony on July 4th.
