What Trump’s Republican trifecta in his first administration accomplished, and where they failed: Flashback

Republicans are expected to control the House majority in the new Congress, giving President-elect Trump a new red trifecta similar to the first two years of his first term.

This will make it easier for Trump to advance his policies without opposition from the Democratic majority.

The Republican Party held a governing triumvirate from 2017 to 2019. Republicans accomplished much of their agenda, including sweeping tax reform and securing a conservative majority on the Supreme Court. However, not all of the priorities crossed the finish line.

Here's a look at their major accomplishments and notable setbacks.

1. Tax Cuts and Jobs Act

One of the Republicans' most notable accomplishments during President Trump's first term was enacting significant tax cuts for individuals and businesses while reshaping the tax code. House Democrats did not support the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

2. Affordable Care Act (ACA)

Mr. Trump's allies in Congress tried to completely repeal the Obama-era ACA, which failed by a narrow margin in the House, including a failed vote in the Senate as expected.

3. Build a border wall

Congress passed more restrictive immigration laws, but President Trump's famous border wall construction was only partially successful. President Trump asked for $25 billion to build the wall, but Congress only approved $1.6 billion during budget negotiations in 2018.

In February 2019, after a month-long government shutdown, President Trump declared a national emergency on the southern border and reallocated about $8 billion from other military construction projects to fund border wall construction.

The Trump administration completed approximately 452 miles of border wall by the end of January 2021.

4. Federal Court Appointments

Mr. Trump sent the Republican Senate nominating 161 federal judges, a significant number of which were confirmed. Two Supreme Court justices, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, were also confirmed during the first half of their terms.

The nomination of Amy Coney Barrett, President Trump's third and final Supreme Court Justice, replacing the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, was made in 2020, the last full year of President Trump's first term. was achieved.

5. Criminal justice reform

With bipartisan support in Congress, President Trump signed the First Step Act into law in 2018, which lowers recidivism rates and expands eligibility for compassionate release for certain federal prisoners.
