What’s next for Trump’s Cabinet nominees?

Now that President Donald Trump has officially taken office, the Senate will continue the confirmation process to solidify his Cabinet.

Most recently, former Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida was unanimously confirmed by the Senate on Monday to serve as Secretary of State. He was sworn in Tuesday morning, the day after Trump's historic inauguration.

Rubio is the first person in the Trump administration to be formally confirmed, but several other candidates have already begun the confirmation process. Most notably, Pentagon Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth, Attorney General nominee Pam Bondi, and Kristi Noem, hired to head the Department of Homeland Security, were all confirmed last week. This was a topic of discussion during the public hearing. .

“Some candidates are on track for confirmation, while others are still awaiting hearings.”

After confirmation hearings, nominees will face the next procedural hurdle in the Senate: committee votes. President Trump's Treasury nominee, Scott Bessent, faces a committee vote on Tuesday and is expected to be confirmed.

Mr. Hegseth, Mr. Noem, CIA director nominee John Ratcliffe, and Office of Management and Budget director nominee Russell Vought all passed their respective Senate committee votes on Monday. Mr. Ratcliffe will next face a confirmation vote.

Some nominees are on track for confirmation, but others are still awaiting hearings, such as President Trump's U.N. ambassador nominee, Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York. There are some too. Stefanik made her confirmation debut before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday and is expected to advance smoothly to confirmation.

Doug Collins, President Trump's nominee to head the Department of Veterans Affairs, will also have his first confirmation hearing on Tuesday.

After the committee votes to approve the nominee, the nomination goes to the full Senate for a vote. Many of the votes in the Senate are not yet scheduled.
