"What's the Privilege?" Attorney Reacts Strongly When Former MSNBC Host Brings Up Race in Relation to Crime

Contentious Exchange on Race and Crime

Criminal defense attorney Arthur Adara reacted strongly after former MSNBC host Tiffany Cross implied that, due to his race, he didn’t need to worry about crime. This sparked a fiery discussion on a recent segment of “CNN News Knight.” National Guard troops have been active in Washington, D.C. since President Donald Trump declared federal oversight of the city’s police to address crime issues.

Abby Phillip described the situation as a “military occupation” after the clash between Adara and Cross. Adara countered, asserting that privileged perspectives manipulate societal narratives. “The issue is who holds the privilege when I am often the target,” he stated.

Cross responded by encouraging Adara to be open-minded and engage thoughtfully, to which he expressed interest. Meanwhile, Kathy Hochul, Governor of New York, had announced in March 2024, the deployment of 750 members of the New York State Guard and 250 state troopers to enhance security in the New York City subway system.

During the debate, Cross raised concerns about the militarization of law enforcement, especially in communities of color, commenting on the disproportionate violence faced by Black individuals. “Is it acceptable for law enforcement to act violently against certain groups?” she questioned. Adara then asked, “But who were the actual victims?”

Since Trump escalated his crime crackdown in the capital, reports indicated over 1,000 arrests and the seizure of 115 firearms. Cross claimed to be privy to firsthand information about these developments.

87 arrests and four illegal firearms were seized in Washington, D.C. last night. There hasn’t been a single carjacking here last week.

Additionally, an alleged member of the Tren de Aragua gang was arrested for burning an American flag in Lafayette Park.

Adara asserted that militarized police actions are causing disturbances among law-abiding citizens, pushing back against the idea that things were as severe as they might seem. However, Cross pushed back slightly, questioning if society was, in fact, closer to a more aggressive law enforcement model than people might want to believe.
