Upcoming White House Correspondents Dinner Following Incident
The White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) has announced the scheduling of another dinner, set for July 24 in Washington, D.C. This comes after the last event was interrupted due to a shooting, marking what is said to be the third assassination attempt on President Donald Trump.
In a statement, WHCA President Jiang Weijia described the upcoming dinner as a “more intimate gathering.” The decision to hold the event again emphasizes WHCA’s commitment to upholding the freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment, according to Jiang.
“The cancellation of this year’s event due to the shooting really drives home our mission,” Jiang expressed. “We won’t let acts of violence dictate our actions, especially in a year where we reflect on the 250th anniversary of America.”
The April 25 dinner had to be cut short after gunfire was heard at the Washington Hilton, where it was taking place, leading to a swift evacuation of President Trump and other officials by Secret Service agents.
On Tuesday, President Trump shared on Truth Social that he would be attending the rescheduled event. He remarked that it would be a sign of resilience that the dinner is going ahead after the chaotic events of April.
“As a sign of strength, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which ended abruptly due to violence, will now be held on July 24,” he wrote. “This is a good sign that we cannot let lunatics disrupt our routines,” he continued, adding that he found the invitation from Jiang to attend both intriguing and significant.
Following the announcement, Presidential Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt, who is currently on maternity leave, expressed her excitement about the upcoming event.
“Looking forward to a great night!” she stated.
Jiang also indicated that further information regarding the event location would be released soon. Nonetheless, Trump noted that it will take place at the Waldorf Astoria on Pennsylvania Avenue, a venue he has a personal connection to, having built it.
“The location is the Waldorf Astoria, a building and ballroom I constructed,” Trump mentioned.
In relation to the incident at the last dinner, the alleged shooter, Cole Thomas Allen, was arrested at a hotel security checkpoint. He faces multiple charges but has pleaded not guilty, potentially facing life in prison if convicted.
“This upcoming dinner will include heightened security measures and new protocols,” Jiang stated.
“Our thoughts are with the injured officer and everyone who experienced that night. We’re thankful to the U.S. Secret Service and hotel staff for their prompt response in ensuring the safety of our guests,” Jiang said. “This event will not only serve our intended program, but it will also stand as a declaration that violence has no place in our society. Courage and community will rise above threats to a free press,” she added.
This year’s event marks a significant moment as President Trump ends a series of boycotts of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
