When asked about potential successors, Trump mentions Vance and Rubio.

President Trump mentioned Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President Vance as potential successors during a recent interview.

In a chat with NBC News’ Kristen Welker, Trump said it’s too soon to decide who might take his place but noted that Vance is doing a “great job.” When asked if Vance was his top choice, Trump indicated that he could be, though he prefers not to get too involved in that matter.

“I think [Vance]…,” he mentioned during an interview with “Meet the Press.” “Marco is great. There are a lot of great individuals. And there’s significant unity. I think if someone is outstanding as a VP, they definitely have an advantage.”

“But I believe all others will hold incredibly high positions,” he added. “Of course, he’ll be challenged by others. We have many good people in our party.”

Trump’s mention of Rubio comes after his notable role as Secretary of State. Rubio recently took on the interim national security adviser position after Mike Waltz stepped down.

He expressed confidence that the MAGA movement could thrive without him and could even strengthen with a “monstrous group of people.” While he highlighted Vance and Rubio, he acknowledged there are plenty more capable people he could name.

Previously, Trump suggested that naming Vance as his successor was premature, but he did call him “very capable.” Early polls indicate Vance is a favorite for the GOP candidacy in 2028.

Welker also pressed Trump about his social media posts hinting at a potential third term, noting he hasn’t completely dismissed the idea. He remarked, “A lot of people want me to do that,” but stated, “as far as I know,” it isn’t possible.

“I’m not sure whether it’s constitutional or not. But there are numerous people selling hats for 2028. Yet, I’m not focused on that. I’ve spent four years doing this and I’d like to pass the baton to someone else.”

He mentioned that some supporters suggested ways for him to pursue another term, but he “hasn’t seen it.”

Amendments to Article 22 of the Constitution permit individuals to be elected to office for a maximum of two terms, although some fringe theories suggest there’s a way around that. Former White House aide Steve Bannon has claimed Trump could be elected for a third term and sworn in as president in 2029.
