During Monday’s broadcast of NewsNation’s “Elizabeth Vargas Report,” Rep. Jake Auchincloss (D-Mass.) said that “when we were working on immigration in the Biden administration,” Vice President and 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris “was instrumental in reducing the number of immigrants from the Central American Triangle countries” and “understood and addressed some of the issues as comprehensively as possible, while fully recognizing that ultimately Congress will have to act to get immigration reform done.”
“I think Trump’s counterargument to Harris will fail,” Auchincloss said. “When Harris was working on immigration in the Biden administration, she organized a coalition of businesses to invest in economic development in the Central American Triangle countries to reduce immigration from there. She understood part of the problem and addressed it as comprehensively as possible, knowing full well that Congress would ultimately have to act to get immigration reform done. And that’s exactly what Congress did. A conservative senator from Oklahoma and a liberal senator from Connecticut put together a tough and fair border security bill that was supported by border patrol agents. And Donald Trump went to a rally and said the quiet parts out loud. Then Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) repeated it. He said, this is bad politics for me, if you fix this problem, I can’t campaign.”
