When will your Social Security payments be made in May? Check the 2025 payment schedule – Democrat and Chronicle

Concerns are mounting among seniors as they face the impact of tariffs and a recent stock market selloff. Vicky Knight, who is semi-retired and works part-time as a yoga instructor in Marietta, Georgia, expressed her worries, stating that her Social Security income is insufficient for her needs. The uncertainties surrounding tariffs and the stock market have only added to her anxiety.

The Social Security payments for May will soon be distributed to nearly 69 million Americans, including retirees and individuals with disabilities. Interestingly, the newly established Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk and supported by the Trump administration, is aimed at managing Social Security while trying to reduce federal expenses. This initiative includes aspects like possible closures of recruitment offices and improvements in customer service strategies.

Approximately 7.4 million Americans on Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which is aimed at individuals with disabilities or limited resources, will also receive benefits. Many of those on SSI also qualify for Social Security.

What is SSI?

Supplemental Security Income provides monthly assistance to people over 65 with limited income or resources, as well as to those who are blind or have qualifying disabilities. Similarly, children with disabilities may also be eligible for SSI benefits.

Generally, SSI eligibility is capped, with monthly wages exceeding $2,019 disqualifying adults from receiving benefits. Those eligible can apply for SSI online or visit local Social Security offices or call 1-800-772-1213 for assistance.

When Can I Start Collecting Social Security?

Everyone can begin receiving at least a reduced Social Security benefit starting at age 62. However, waiting until your full retirement age will increase your monthly payments. This age has gradually risen, increasing by two months for each consecutive year of birth. For those born in 1958, it’s 66 years and 8 months; for those born in 1959, it’s 66 years and 10 months.

According to the SSA, individuals born between May 2, 1958, and February 28, 1959, will reach full retirement age in 2025. For those born in 1960 and beyond, the full retirement age is set at 67.
