Republican Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri said Thursday that a whistleblower has come forward to allege even more significant security failures in the lead-up to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
“New and disturbing information has come to light.”
Hawley documented his allegations in a letter to Secret Service Acting Director Ronald Rowe. Posted to X.
“Since your testimony before the Senate on July 30, new and disturbing information has come to light about the Secret Service’s planning for, and your own involvement in, the Trump campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania,” Hawley wrote.
According to the letter, the whistleblower accused Rowe of personally reducing the Secret Service’s countersurveillance division’s staffing by 20 percent and then failing to disclose that information during congressional testimony.
According to the whistleblower, if the CSD had been allowed to carry out its normal security duties at the Butler rally, the suspects would have been arrested long before they targeted the former president.
The whistleblower also alleged that some officers had warned about security lapses before the shooting, but that instead of heeding the warnings, authorities retaliated against the officers.
Hawley asked Rowe to turn over records of policy changes made during his tenure, specifically related to the CSD, as well as records regarding Secret Service employees who have been disciplined.
The allegations are just the latest in a series of shocking allegations of incompetence and mismanagement by the Secret Service in its role protecting Trump, whose director subsequently resigned under intense scrutiny and public pressure.
