Body Found on Horn Island, Search Intensifies for Missing Teen

A body was discovered on Horn Island in Mississippi early Monday morning. This comes as the search continues for Nolan Xavier Wells, an 18-year-old football player from Southwest Mississippi Community College who went missing over the Fourth of July weekend.

The body was located by park rangers around 8:45 a.m., and officials believe it matches the description of Wells, as reported by WLOX. Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lind indicated that DNA testing will confirm the identity, stating, “There’s no reason to believe it wasn’t him.”

Wells was last seen on July 4 at about 3 p.m. while on Horn Island, part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, which attracts a considerable number of visitors during the holiday season.

According to reports, Wells was at the island with friends and was observed “playing with a girl before disappearing.”

The search operation was spearheaded by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, assisted by the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, personnel from the Gulf Islands National Seashore, the U.S. Coast Guard, and volunteers from Cajun Navy, as noted by WLOX.

Some speculated that he may have wandered into the interior of the island or perhaps fallen into a lake. Brian Trasher from the Cajun Navy expressed doubt about this theory, citing the challenging terrain, “He probably would have turned around and gone to the beach,” he said, reflecting on the thorny bushes and cacti that would have made it difficult for someone without shoes to navigate the area.

Wells’ mother, Kristin Wonsley, shared her anguish on social media, urging anyone who might have photos or videos of her son to assist in the search.

As the news spread, various comments emerged online, with some blaming Wells’ friends for his disappearance and debate igniting about his decision to attend the gathering. One commenter provocatively asked when “black people will learn” to avoid those situations.

While WLOX reported that investigators had not confirmed whether Wells remained on Horn Island after going missing, they are encouraging anyone who interacted with him that day to reach out with any relevant information.

Later in the afternoon, as media outlets began reporting the identification of the body, Wonsley publicly expressed her devastation and requested privacy for her family during this difficult time.

The investigation is still active, and authorities have not shared further details about the circumstances surrounding Wells’ disappearance.
