White House attributes nuclear agency layoffs to Democrat shutdown

White House Criticizes Democratic Shutdown

The White House has condemned what it labels the “Democratic Shutdown,” asserting that it endangers national security. This comes just as 80% of federal agencies tasked with managing the U.S. nuclear stockpile are set to face furloughs in the near future.

“This Democratic shutdown threatens national security,” White House Press Secretary Taylor Rogers stated. She emphasized that Democrats’ refusal to approve a clean, bipartisan funding extension is draining resources for essential programs, leading to furloughs among National Nuclear Security Agency employees who oversee the country’s nuclear stockpile.

Rogers added, “This is reckless and could have been easily avoided if Democrats had simply voted to reopen the government instead of holding the American people hostage.”

White House officials indicated the potential for “several thousand” federal job cuts, greater than what was projected during the Trump administration. According to reports, almost all employees at the National Nuclear Security Agency will be furloughed due to funds swiftly running out.

The National Nuclear Security Administration, part of the U.S. Department of Energy, is responsible for maintaining the nuclear stockpile and minimizing the threat from nuclear weapons abroad. As funding dwindles, the agency will shift to minimal security operations, focusing on critical areas such as physical security and emergency management.

Chris Wright, the Department of Energy Secretary, expressed concerns about the imminent furloughs, stating, “We haven’t had to furlough anyone yet, but if this shutdown continues, we will have no choice.” He warned that prolonged shutdown might push employees to seek other work, which could compromise national security.

Administration officials have communicated that this shutdown will significantly impact the nuclear deterrent mission, with various offices closing and lingering issues expected even after reopening.

Republican lawmakers, including Alabama Rep. Mike Rogers, have commented on the situation, underscoring the urgency of the matter. Rogers mentioned receiving updates that agency funds were running low and emphasized the importance of employees managing strategic nuclear assets.

The ongoing shutdown has been a result of a failure to pass a funding bill for 2026 since October 1. Republicans have blamed Democrats for the impasse, accusing them of misusing tax dollars for health care benefits for illegal immigrants, a claim Democrats vigorously deny. They, in turn, point fingers at Republicans for exacerbating the situation.

As the stalemate continues, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer remarked, “The longer Republicans refuse to negotiate, the more difficult it will become for Americans. Every day we get closer to showing who’s truly working for them.”
