The White House acknowledged the passing of Pope Francis on Monday morning. a A concise statement was shared via social media.

“Rest in peace, Pope Francis,” read a post from the official White House X account.

This message included two images; one featured the pope alongside President Trump and another captured Vice President Vance with Francis.

Vance had an audience with the Pope on Easter Sunday, the day preceding Francis’s death. Following the visit, Vance mentioned in a message shared Monday that the Pope was “clearly very unwell,” but expressed gratitude for the opportunity to see him.

“I have just learned that Pope Francis has died. My thoughts are with the millions of Christians globally who cherished him,” Vance stated. I posted it on x.

Francis passed away on Monday in 1988 at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, Vatican City, after a prolonged struggle with health issues linked to chronic lung disease.The Vatican confirmed.

The pontiff was admitted to the hospital for bronchitis on February 14th, followed by a pneumonia diagnosis just four days later, and was classified as being in “crisis” by the Vatican on February 22nd. He never fully recuperated.

Born in Argentina in 1936, Pope Jorge Mario Bergoglio shattered ceilings in the Catholic Church when he was elected as the first pope from the Americas, succeeding the first representative of the Jesuit Order, the intellectual branch of the church focusing on charity. He was recognized for his advocacy for human rights and his sharp political insight.
