White House Not Ruling Out Potential Commutation For Hunter’s Sentence

US President Joe Biden chats with his son Hunter Biden upon arrival at the Delaware Air National Guard Base in New Castle, Delaware, en route to Wilmington, Delaware, on June 11, 2024. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that whatever sentence Hunter Biden receives, the Biden administration would not rule out a presidential commutation.

The White House has ruled out the possibility of a pardon, according to the president, but a spokesman suggested at a press conference on Wednesday that a presidential commute could be on the table.

“As you all know, the sentence hasn’t even been scheduled yet,” Jean-Pierre said. “He’s been very clear, very forthright and obviously categorical” about the president’s comments about a possible pardon, Jean-Pierre said, but “I’m not thinking about anything beyond that” regarding a commutation.

Jean-Pierre claimed he has not spoken to President Biden since the sentence was handed down.

A jury on Tuesday convicted the older son of three felony counts related to purchasing and possessing a gun while under the influence of drugs.

After the trial, President Biden accepted his son’s sentence and said he would “continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers his appeal.”

A date for sentencing has not yet been set.

Meanwhile, Hunter’s second trial on tax evasion charges is scheduled to begin in California in September.

He is accused of failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes between 2016 and 2019.
